Why start with 300 words?

The first 300 frequency items are not a fluency claim. They are a first layer of recognition: particles, auxiliaries, common verbs, pronouns, fillers, and everyday nouns that appear so often that they shape the rhythm of real Japanese.

This page preserves frequency order, including repeated surface forms where the source separates meanings, readings, or grammatical uses. That repetition is useful: it shows that small words like の, に, は, で, and と carry several jobs, and those jobs matter before a learner can comfortably parse longer sentences.

Frequency gives you leverage

Japanese comprehension depends heavily on small recurring forms. A sentence can be full of familiar particles and auxiliaries while the main content word is still new. Learning the high-frequency layer first gives the learner stable reference points in grammar, listening, and reading.

Word frequency does not equal understanding. The unfamiliar part of a sentence often carries the story: names, topic-specific nouns, exact verbs, idioms, and context. This list is useful because it removes some of the repeated friction around the sentence, not because it replaces native material or deeper vocabulary study.

Treat these entries as the foundation under later reading and listening. Once this layer feels familiar, the next gains come from sentence mining, audio exposure, grammar in context, and expanding into thousands of concrete words.

The columns explained

Japanese term is the written form from the frequency list. It may be kana, kanji, or a mixed expression.

Hiragana gives the reading, which is the safest pronunciation anchor for beginners.

Romanization is a temporary bridge. Use it to orient yourself, then return to kana.

English meaning gives the compact study sense, not every dictionary possibility.

Repeated forms are intentional when the source distinguishes meaning, usage, or grammatical role.

How this list was made

This is a compiled high-frequency reference layer, ordered by frequency. Rankings are approximate and depend on the corpus behind them — treat them as a useful ordering, not an exact measurement.

Meanings are compact study glosses — the practical sense for recognition, not full dictionary entries. Readings are given in hiragana, and repeated surface forms are intentional where the source separates grammatical uses.

If you spot an error, corrections are welcome — send a correction.

A list is a beginning

A frequency list removes friction; it does not replace real exposure. The gains from here come from reading and listening to material a little above your level, mining sentences you actually meet, and returning to these forms in context until they feel ordinary.

Focus Immersion is being built around exactly that kind of slow, deliberate study. Keep me posted, or carry on with another language:
