Why start with 300 words?

The first 300 frequency items are not a fluency claim. They are a first layer of recognition: the small but persistent words that make Russian sentences hold together before the more specific vocabulary arrives.

Russian rewards early attention to function words and grammatical categories. Prepositions, particles, pronouns, conjunctions, and high-frequency verbs repeat constantly, and recognizing them makes case endings, word order, and sentence logic easier to notice in real reading and listening.

Frequency gives you leverage

In Russian, very common words carry a lot of structural weight. Words like и, в, не, на, я, быть, что, and с appear everywhere, so learning them early gives the learner repeated anchors inside sentences that would otherwise feel dense.

Frequency does not equal understanding. The unfamiliar words in a sentence often carry the main content: exact nouns, verbs, names, cultural references, and context. This list is useful because it clears some of the recurring grammatical surface, not because it replaces deeper vocabulary, cases, aspect, or native material.

Treat these entries as the foundation under later reading and listening. Once this layer feels familiar, the next gains come from sentence exposure, audio, morphology, and a much larger base of concrete words.

The columns explained

Russian is the Cyrillic form to learn first.

Romanization is a pronunciation bridge. It helps orientation, but Cyrillic should take over quickly.

Part of speech means part of speech. It tells whether the word is acting as a preposition, particle, pronoun, verb, noun, or another grammatical role.

English meaning gives a compact learner gloss, not every dictionary sense.

Repeated forms are preserved when the source ranks different functions separately.

How this list was made

This is a compiled high-frequency reference layer, ordered by frequency. Rankings are approximate and depend on the corpus behind them — treat them as a useful ordering, not an exact measurement.

Meanings are compact study glosses — the practical sense for recognition, not full dictionary entries. Transliteration is a bridge to the Cyrillic, and part of speech is noted where it helps.

If you spot an error, corrections are welcome — send a correction.

A list is a beginning

A frequency list removes friction; it does not replace real exposure. The gains from here come from reading and listening to material a little above your level, mining sentences you actually meet, and returning to these forms in context until they feel ordinary.

Focus Immersion is being built around exactly that kind of slow, deliberate study. Keep me posted, or carry on with another language:
