한국어 Korean 300

300 Korean words with Hanja-era character equivalents. A compact starting layer for recognizing the words and forms that appear again and again in ordinary Korean.

List v1.2 · reviewed 2026-05-31 · report a correction →

Why start with 300 words?

A few hundred high-frequency words will not make Korean transparent. This is not a fluency claim. It is a first layer of recognition: the repeated particles, basic verbs, pronouns, common nouns, and sentence pieces that keep appearing before the more specific vocabulary arrives.

The goal is to make early Korean less visually anonymous. When a learner can recognize these forms quickly, sentences become easier to scan, audio has more anchors, and later vocabulary has somewhere to attach.

Frequency gives you leverage

In real language use, the most frequent words do more work than a normal word count suggests. A small set of function words, core verbs, and basic everyday nouns appears constantly, so learning them early gives a learner more repeated contact with actual Korean.

That does not mean word counts equal understanding. The missing words in any sentence often carry the important content: names, topic-specific nouns, precise verbs, slang, cultural references, and context. This list is useful because it clears part of the recurring structure, not because it replaces listening, reading, grammar, or real context.

Treat these 300 entries as the first visible layer. After this, the next meaningful targets are broader: roughly a thousand words for survival footing, a few thousand for daily conversation, and many thousands for comfortable reading and listening.

The columns explained

Korean is the Hangul spelling you will see in modern Korean.

Romanization is a pronunciation aid. Use it to orient yourself, then let Hangul take over.

English gives the practical meaning range, not every dictionary sense.

Character-era equivalent gives a Hanja, Chinese, or Kanji-style association for memory and historical patterning.

Status / note tells you whether the character is true etymological Hanja, a semantic gloss, or an ambiguous mapping.

Particles (조사)

Korean marks a word's grammatical role with particles attached to the end of it. They're among the most frequent elements in the language, but they're bound morphemes — not standalone dictionary words — so they live here rather than in the frequency table above. The form often depends on whether the word ends in a vowel or a consonant.

How this list was made

This is a compiled high-frequency reference layer, ordered by frequency. Rankings are approximate and depend on the corpus behind them — treat them as a useful ordering, not an exact measurement.

Meanings are compact study glosses — the practical sense for recognition, not full dictionary entries. Romanization is a bridge to hangul, with a Sino-Korean (hanja) equivalent shown where relevant.

If you spot an error, corrections are welcome — send a correction.

A list is a beginning

A frequency list removes friction; it does not replace real exposure. The gains from here come from reading and listening to material a little above your level, mining sentences you actually meet, and returning to these forms in context until they feel ordinary.

Focus Immersion is being built around exactly that kind of slow, deliberate study. Keep me posted, or carry on with another language:
